Add-On Cooling: Refrigerated Cooling Without Replacing Your Heater
There is a middle path between keeping evaporative cooling and replacing everything, and it is regularly overlooked because nobody selling a full system has much incentive to raise it.
If your home already runs gas ducted heating, you already own most of a cooling system. You have a fan, a complete distribution network of ducts, and outlets in every room. What you lack is a means of removing heat from the air.
How it works
Add-on cooling supplies precisely that missing piece. A refrigerated evaporator coil is installed in the supply air stream above your existing furnace, and an outdoor condenser is sited outside and connected with insulated refrigerant lines.
In winter the furnace operates exactly as it always has. In summer the burner stays off, the fan runs, and air passes across the chilled coil before entering the same ducts and the same outlets. One controller, one set of vents, both functions.
Across Wodonga in particular, where gas ducted heating is widely installed, this is frequently the most sensible answer available — and it is meaningfully cheaper than a full changeover, because you are adding two components rather than replacing an entire system.
When it is the right decision
Three conditions need to hold. The furnace must be in sound condition with useful life ahead of it. The ductwork must be in reasonable order and adequately sized. And there needs to be a workable position outside for a condenser with proper airflow clearance.
Meet all three and add-on cooling is usually the lower-cost route to refrigerated cooling, and a straightforward one.
When it is a false economy
The case collapses when the furnace is near the end of its life.
If you fit cooling around a heater that fails in three years, you pay for the integration work twice — once now, and again when the furnace is replaced and the new equipment has to be married back into the system. In that situation a reverse cycle system replacing both is generally better long-term value, even though it costs more today.
This is the judgement worth pressing your installer on. The honest assessment is about the age and condition of your existing furnace, not about which job is easier to sell.
And the cheaper alternative worth ruling out first
If the reason you are looking is simply that the house has no cooling at all, price a ducted evaporative system before you commit to add-on refrigerated. It is a cheaper install and a cheaper machine to run, and in this climate it does the job on the majority of summer days. The case for refrigerated is specifically about performance on humid days and the ability to hold a set temperature with the house closed up — if you do not need those things, you do not need to pay for them.
What should be checked first
The furnace itself: age, condition, heat exchanger integrity, and whether the fan can move the airflow refrigerated cooling requires — which is often greater than heating demands.
Then the ductwork, because ducting sized and insulated for heating does not automatically suit cooling, and poor insulation costs far more in summer than winter. Then condensate drainage from the coil, the condenser position, and whether the switchboard can carry the extra load.
If any of those materially change the economics, you should be told plainly and given the comparison against a full system — not quietly walked into the smaller job because it closes faster.
